The PTW Dominator

The easiest thing in the world is to copy, especially a proven concept….the other end of the spectrum is to come up with something different to the masses. I set out from the start with this buggy to make something completely different from anything that I have come across, and believe me I have seen, and collected thousands of different photo’s of kite buggies. It will remain to be seen if this buggy will be as good, or any better from what is all ready out there, and the chances are it wont, but things like that don’t stop me from trying. I am setting out to make a buggy with ….errrm wings, it will have arm type wings instead of the conventional axle, IF…. I decide to block the wings in I am hoping to create down force at the higher speeds, whether this extra down force adds extra drag losing any speed will remain to be seen…..first things first, lets make it.

Statistics
Gross Weight 66kgs
Length Axle Centres 2000mm
Width Over Rear Axle Plates 1620mm
Rear Wheel Centres 1875mm
Overall Width 2170mm

Forks 33mm O/D tube 3mm wall
Head Stock 60mm O/D 5mm wall
Fork plates and Yokes 8mm
Swan Neck 48mm O/D 2.77mm wall total length 1000mm
Swan Neck clamp 60mm O/D 5mm wall with 10mm plates
Frame Work 33mmO/D 2.77mm wall total 10880mm
Axle plates 8mm, Foot pegs 27mm O/D 2.77mm wall

The side rails are going to be where I start this buggy, which is unusual for me, but I wanted to get the stage out of the way, and to get a better Idea of what the buggy would look like.

note:- The leading link forks that I made are no good, my fault, I didn’t allow enough room for the tyre where the rubber mounts are housed, because of the forward position of the front axle, the housing ends up at the widest part of the tyre, meaning there is no way I can use that set with these wheels. I will now make another set of fork taking these extra dimensions into account. Watch this space.

Many many thanks once again to my good friends Jon and Helen from www.Buggybags.co.uk for the brilliant craftsmanship in the seat covers and the unique curved Total Splash Guard.

The Comments this buggy got when I unveiled it

I love it. I love the front axle plate.
I love the geometry of the sides/back end. Formula 1 shape, especially if and when you add panels there.
I love the way it sits on the ground..its “hang” is awesome.
I love the tubular curved swan neck.
Attention to detail is second to none.
Massive wow factor.
What else can I say?
That, mate, is a work of art, i love it, cant wait to have a go in her
I think it is awesome, I really like the heel straps, built for speed.   the rear “axle” is very very nice, I love how beefy and reinforced it is.   I would like to know the total weight of this buggy and the distance between the inside bolts of the real wheels   ie;   the “axle length”   This is   a very very nice buggy.   the swan neck and front axle is really cool, a new and innovative design.   Your use of smooth arcs give an organic appearance.   It reminds me of a harley chopper you did it again , great art 😉
man its cool on speed.
I’d sell my kids for one of these, especially the heavy duty nut cracking frame (that upright doesn’t look as GRRRR as the rest of it mind, re-enforced?).
Bang on tool dood.
Can you make the seat about a foot wider so I can have a go :o)
Looking good, it’s amazing to see a new design coming through. Its different to every other buggy I’ve seen, not that I’ve seen a lot of them around here. I really like the tubular chassis, it looks bomb proof – reminds me of an ariel atom. I think I prefer your fork plates that you had on the cougar, but that’s just a personal preference.
How does the shaped tubular swan neck compare to the cut and welded swan, in terms of performance and production difficulty?
Again an unbelievable finish you get on that stainless… It really does show the amount of work that’s been put into it. Let me know how you get on with it at the beach and have fun.
Awesome bugg!!
Whats your top-tip for polishing up frames as mines looking slightly dull with all the sand n salt on it?
You always manage to go that one step farther then we think is possible great Job from a great guy !!
Well what can I say……..
that looks absolutely awesome. Once again you’ve surpassed the standards that most people dream of .
Can’t wait to see this one in action
that looks immense, i like the bbs style swan neck and those insane side rails !! An extremely professional piece of work, well done,
As usual… man does it shine! I had some thoughts about the downtube being sturdy enough as there are great forces at that point. Thought maybe additional reinforcement would have been better. Although that was from viewing it in parts. The main photo of you in the bug makes it look thick enough to handle a good amount of loading. I do like the fancy front wheel & fork piece. Thought something scrolling like that would have fit well as reinforcement at the downtube weld. The rear looks quite beefy & structurally sound enough to resist any bending or twisting from side forces. THere’s room for a rumble seat back there.lol(maybe next edition.) I’m surprised that you aren’t using chrome rims yet. Your buggies are so shiny that the wheels (no matter how large) look plain. MAybe some spinners   or fancy mag type rims.At least baby moon hub caps.Me I’d like something like James Bond had.hahaha.. Big chrome cutters! Would keep those tire(or tyre as you say here) nipping dogs away.lol
A nice piece of work Carl.. as usual. I was unable to view some of the photos but from what I saw it looks like an impressive ride. Bling Bling!
Not sure of your riding style but if you are an overpowered rider you may want to add some weights… especially to the front. Being so far ahead of you it may need some additional weight. Your test rides will let you know if thats needed though.
Keep up the good work. Your starting to remind me of Pauly off the American Chopper tv show… only with kites instead of bikes.lol
The buggy is savage! very pretty, length of back axis? weight? Very pretty!
Good job! I bet you have a twinkle in your eye today mate
That looks very tidy. I cant imagine how painfull it was to polish   So many nooks and crannies … you have done so well. It has come up looking fantastic.
I can see how much work you have done … so many parts crafted … so many intersections to calculate.
I think your going to have to fork out for a bigger trailer there fellah … looking a little overloaded … lol Whats the weight ?

Eagerly awaiting the first Dominator video
Wow   Marty you have got a lot to live up to man! Sure you can come up with the goods though.
Nice work PTW!! That is one phat looking bug, the “Chopper” of kite buggies. The design work in the front forks is bloody excellent
Looking forward to seeing some vid of this one, plenty of spots to mount the cam or cams
Very nice Carl….. very nice….
That is an exceptional piece of craftsmanship!
I am sure you will have a lot of interest in this buggy. great work Carl.
Nice buggy carl looks the bee’s knee’s. Don’t think you will have any problems with a bent back axle
That is one very sweet looking ride Popeye, you have excelled yourself again. Looks like it’s going fast standing still
Another top buggy there PTW!!
I think you have made more models than the Libre factory!!
brilliant! looked at the piczo page and saw the pic. then noticed the add at the top said “hair removal needn’t be difficult”
christ thats a beautiful bug mate well done again
well done mate. I’m not a buggier myself but that is a fantastic piece of work. I’d be to scared to ride it…looks too nice lol
Can a Buggy ever be Art. In short yes. This should be displayed in the Tate Modern, obviously after it has had a thorough blasting up and down a beach.
M8 this is the biz, very nice
That downtube is awesome,
ever though of having a go at a freestyle buggy?
Your an artist mate – the buggy looks sensational!!!!
Makes me want to go out and learn how to weld!!
Thats the easy bit   bending the pipes the way Carl does it is very difficult
looks good now its finished Carl
The round down tube is same as the latest BBS
Did you get it on the scales yet????????????
now that is something special mate, you can really be proud of that work of art. Let us know how the testing and handling goes
The dogs balloxx, and I wouldn’t want to hit mine on that gps holder……
looks sweet carl when is test day
This is a work of art!!! I reckon you could take out a couple of small children / dogs in one swift fly past with those rear winds you have for the axle
Brilliant job, hate to think how much one of these would cost if it went in to production!!
how do you get the gps out?!
Carl thats absolutely awesome man. Hope it runs as good as it looks.
P.S. How heavy?
that looks amazing mate, your craftsmanship and attention to details is excilent   . Yet another wicked buggy mate   bet you can get some speed with that thing. What’s the distance between the back wheels ?
Awesome Carl. As a structural designer I can see your thinking. That back end will be sooo rigid with all that triangulation. Can’t wait to hear first feedback. Top job again dude
Its ok i suppose, if thats the best you could do with what you had at hand
Nice Bug Carl, working out that curved Tsg was interesting ….LOL
Designed for Speed, lets hope it goes like it looks.
If Carlsberg did buggies
INcredible workmanship with concepts aplenty. Very cool, congratulations to another addition to the PTW range.
If popeyethewelder did beer…. Simply beautiful, they get better and better
Absolutley Awesome
Another remarkable work from the PTW stable Carl. Well done again. I like the idea of you using the round sectioned down tube (has better resistance to torsional loading than square tube). I think the rear end isn’t going to give any problems. Why! you could even send it down here for us to test out in the dunes. That would be purely for a serious test evaluation of course and I promise no one should have fun in it.
Neat & snazzy front fork too.
Bugybags too has enhanced the look of your new chariot. Chariot is a more sophicated name than buggy for your latest work of art. Dominator is a good name. It reminds me of the old Norton Dominator motorcycle, which when introduced with it’s featherbed frame was in its day the stiffest bike frame on the road. I see this is a break from your other buggies that all had names of big cats.
How many hours of polishing went into this one Carl or shouldn’t I ask?
I’m looking forward to 31 August when I hope there is plenty of wind so I can watch it tearing along Maplethorpe beach.
Once again, great job.
DROOOOOOOOOOOOL
That is deffo top-drawer, Carl, Well Done!!!
sweeeeet
Yet again you have produced a cracking looking buggy, bet you cant wait to get it on the beach,
Quit your job and get these into production
WoW Beautiful.
Wot, no cup holder   I would hate to think the hours that you spent on this. the time spent polishing would put it out of my price range !!
Ah yet another sweet looking sand smacker, one day you’ll make one where the seat is wide enough to fit my wide cheek, and this one looks like you can’t break it down for the boot (of an ISUZU for example).
That headsUp is well doody though, almost Alien (no relation lol).
Let’s put this into perspective the cost of the raw steel alone would put it out of most peoples price range!!
Just read through PTW build pages, fantastic. And with Carl sitting in it, it looks huge.
Su–perb!
aBSOLUTLY FANTSATIC.
by far the best you’ve done.
you should just make 3 more and sell them!
Uber money!
I have only one thing to say!!!   Please let me have a go???? pretty please   :0)       That buggy with 25mph wind at bls.    ooohhhh plllleeeeeeaaaseeeee.
ALLL REET ,..NICE ONE POPS   See yer going fer the increasingly popular curved arched down tube bud. Looks gud, and the back axle thingy has got some influences there too from a previous one. …Sweeet Also the “Nike” forks look awsome. How about the new design suspension forks . ? They werk too. ? I gather the “stirrups work for you.
wow Carlos, once again a very nice bug.   But its a little small ,don’t you think.
With such a buggy would I have made a double bend sidebars to have a bigger seat.
But for the rest…….
Well….I think nice or beautifull wouldn’t cover it.
Outstanding and you could name dominating.
Build quality perfect, design also very unusual.
Like, footpegs, and the whole rearsection, fantastic! Dislike, those wheelplates on the front and the however beatifully made, the in my opinion fragiel looking swanneck (compared to the massive rear)
It’s a maater of taste but I really think you made yourself the best yet.
What I also like is the way you made your seat as comfi as could be. Here’s were I struggle with my last build, I cant get the perfect seating yet, think this is the solution!
Once again Carlos, this is beauty at it’s best! Just add a full leather seat like Matn and you have the ‘Harley on the beach’!
yep, nice buggy, where did I see that fork design !?!
that’s mine, how much…first dibs…!
Man Popeye, wish you were my neighbor…there’s a house across the street thats for sale…ever think about moving to L.A.
love the curved downtube … similar to the BBS Concept.
must say the front fork looks AWESOME
hehehe, another heel strap user
sweet dude, what does it weigh?
Awesome design Carl
All I can say is “WOW”.
Carl, that is one sweet ride! I LOVE the axle plates with the ‘swoop’ very very very cool. Have you tried the alternitive front forks? That is a elegant way do set up a suspention system.   As always it is a joy to see a craftsman’s work.
como se dice babear en ingles? ? : D          IN-CRE-I-BLE popeye
Popeye: Can i be your new son?
It’s simply fantastic; very nice and a good job.
When i be a senior i will be as you
ARTE! ESTO ES ARTE!
Hello Pope
As we say in Spain… Your buggy is very very Kojonudo.
Respekt an die Arbeit, wirklich sehr gelungen, vorallem die Gabel gefällt mir sehr gut. Ist das verchromt oder VA poliert ???
That it awesome mate, a real work of art
Carl, Fantastic craftsmanship… you lead and I guess others will follow!!
Any thoughts on a freestyle buggy??
nice going Carl… B-E-A-utiful..!!!!!!
WOW ! to fall in love with, how beautifull made. This must be very ridgid at the back. I like the whole buggy, but as matn says, a double tube made in the same shape would be asome. In my eyes this would finish the design totally   keep up this very nice work
Pops,
That is NOT just a buggy – it is a work of art! Curious on how it goes~~~~~~!
You´re a genious Mr Popeye. We enjoy much your designs . Thanks.
Not bad…..but I bet you couldn’t put a wrigley’s fruit pastel in ya mouth without chewing it. lol
top marks again……
That looks great ……are you interested in making one a bit lighter…..would like to have one myself…..be good to be able to mount some kind of fairing over it to make it aero dynamic …..but it looks so good you wouldn’t want to cover it up!
Absolutely awesome – after all that polishing it seems a same to go and get it sandy– look forward to a report on its test run If there was a competition for best presented buggy you would win hands down
How does it ride is more important then dimensions.
I’ve ridden Carl’s previous 2 bugs – the Superbug and the Wildkat. Whilst they are very different, there is a balanced, solid and very predictable sure-footed feel about them. There’s certainly none of the twitching and shaking that you get with lesser quality constructions.
Another stunning and unique buggy from the master of his craft. Much respect and admiration is due.
I like the Wildkat influence in the rear axle design and especially like the curved swanny Carl. It’s a beaut!!
All I can say is WOW… I want one……
Fantastic as always!   Perhaps a formula 1 style wing across the back will be needed   :).
looks the dogs danglies mate but then again u know that hey but i suppose swelling ur head wont hurt to much u never know i may get to make 1 for next year (a special 1 off hey of course at mates rates lol)
You’re getting a bit good at this buggymaking stuff mate 😀
Looks superb !
.the buggy dominator is great!!!! you are the best costructor buggy…
Awersome work mate. The king of bling
That’s one sweeeeetttt looking buggy Carl
66kg!!
Thats as heavy as me!!!!
How in the World could anyone come up with criticism? Again an outstanding job! Keep up the good work.
You have a gift you know,,,, that looks more like artwork than bug…..
It reminds me a bit of the US chopper they make up,,, looks very good,, you will have to let us know how it rides,,, and if you try out the rear wing…
I would say you should go into selling them,, but I suspect the time it take you would be to rich for most…
Jodo, que pedazo de bicho con ruedas   ¿Estais seguros de que es un buggy?
Un saludo
You are not simply an artisan, u r an artist Popeye. Please, keep enjoying us with your creations.
know what i want for christmas no doubts… hope santa remembers this.
Amazing, nothing else to say….
it´s name should have been THE BEAST!
ya ha mandado un modelo para aqui y    , asi es la vida ( ? )
Hmmm thats not gonna be an racing buggy due the new coming regulations
Anyway nice work dude! Only the bloody polishing work damn …. you have enough spare time   .
beautifull build buggy Carl! All the things are just perfect. It shines like a mirror.
Ca en jette ceci dit nous avons notre pooeye aussi dans l’asso
Carl, this is the biggest work of art you have made yet!   I’m not sure you will get any worthwhile benefits from downforce because it will be in direct competition with speed.   I could be wrong but that’s my take.   A ribbed tire might help you apply more power to the buggy without starting to slide out.   Is this your goal?   I guess it could work but it seems that merely having a heavier buggy would accomplish the same task without adding wind resistance to the buggy.   I know from car tests that vehicle weight on flat ground doesn’t affect top speed.   Downforce would be at the expense of top speed unless you can’t use all the power you have available because you are slipping sideways.   I’m anxious to hear your test ride report.
beautifull build buggy Carl! All the things are just perfect. It shines like a mirror.
Pure class!!! As usual what’s a fantastic lookin buggy is taken to the next level by the attention to detail!
B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L
Mr. The-Welder! That thing is pure, unadulterated, buggying porn
What a ride, amazing buggy, work of art.
cool awsome bug carl how much u want for it
You should seriously think about putting some of your PTW designs into production, Carl. Or at least patent them backwards, awesome peices of kit.
NICE . im pleased it all went well for the first outing carl as usual no will be suprised to hear the buggy works really well you built it for gods sake. bring on the next build eh
Carl, that is one sweet ride! I LOVE the axle plates with the ‘swoop’ very very very cool. Have you tried the alternitive front forks? That is a elegant way do set up a suspention system.   As always it is a joy to see a craftsman’s work.
after drooling over the buggy, i was drooling over the beach runs too. =)
Nice Carl. and also a nice beach.!!
few questions: have you tested the bug’s behavior when you’re flying seriously overpowerd? and can you brace yourself enough when you’re performing an Up-windturn wich is taken at a reasonable high speed? (didn’t see one in the movie..) what happens when you lift your feet of the steps when you’re riding about 20-25MPH? does it go straight on without hesitation? is the driving characteristic of the bug more over- or understeer?
met alles erop en eraan..
Met wielen hoop ik?
Jup, 60kg max. Daar kom ik dan aangewandeld met mijn buggy van 46kg.
Op het EK in frankrijk gaat ook elke buggy gewogen worden + de rijder en gaat er na een manche gevraagd worden welke maat vlieger je vloog.
Popeye, nice work man. Really outstanding. Try to pimp the ‘footbrace’ with a stronger brace?
Now I can see why it is 60kg, that is one huge buggy, seeing it next to those cars. Hey Carl, is that bordering on street legal, ie need a wide load flag during transport? Well done. My wife said, no wonder it’s called Dominator, just look at the size of it!
all that hard work has paid you back very well.
‘Rails’ …… there is something delightfull about handling being compared to ‘rails’

And your OBE   ….. that would have to be one of the biggest I have seen
Glad you are ok !! … (did you show the wife
Very Nice looking buggy Popeye, sounds like it drives very well. What’s next for the Dominator will you be holding buggy crushing shows like the monster trucks do.
Nice to see all that work has gone into making one very nice buggy
You know i’ve always been a fan Popeye….but you’ve been outdone in the admiration stakes….I think i need to talk to ya wife to ask for handy hints and tips!!!….      mr popeye one fully sick bug man , you inspire , design make build and ride some kewl bugs your vids are awsome too and i’v seen martys (jks) couger and i cant wait for a go too keep it going mate you are the real deal , kiteing is your life .
mr popeye one fully sick bug man , you inspire , design make build and ride some kewl bugs your vids are awsome too and i’v seen martys (jks) couger and i cant wait for a go too keep it going mate you are the real deal , kiteing is your life .
HELL YEAH!!
W.O.W
Nice job Carl, now I understand my Dave was muttering something about a new design for the rear…..looks excellent.I cant wait to see what speeds you can get out of it especially after the down force….Love your work!!! Pete
AWSOME
great job!!! you can be proud of it!
Jeez, its not long since you finished the Wildcat!! You certainly can knock out the new buggies Carl!!
The forks look sweet, all swirly like!!!
OMG, just HOW sexy is that new beast?   And the new buggy is pretty cool too….      Seriously, that is art on wheels – I bet it rides like a dream…
Nice buggy Carl!…….and it’s good to see that you let MrM put it through the stress test
You once said to me that your buggies are only made to be put together once and never taken to bits……Any future plans to design a folding stainless bug you are able to fit into a hatchback…just thinking of a new challenge
effing sweet buggy mate! the front end reminds me of a libre dragster..very good quality..how much you want for it? 😛
I cannot get over how MrM make that monster look like a normal sized buggy. That is till you see him in a normal little freestyle buggy and start to get a feel for erm… proportions.
You have set a standard that is difficult to approach in style and execution, thank you for setting the bar at a very respectable height so the rest of us mortals can dream. Awesome, simply awesome.
Once again you have produced an awesome buggy. Each model you make is even more impressive than the last. You are an inspiring artist, congrats on a job well done.
Keep pushing those boudaries Carl, that is cooooool looking ride, nice work, look forward to seeing the beasty at theddlethorpe!,cheers dude, onewaypete.
Its a work of art
OMG. I want it
This man is an incredible artist in Stainless steel!!!
I love the front forks! They look mean as anything!! Liked his idea for the front suspension, just a shame he forgot to take in to account the width of the rubber stoppers and he can’t put the wheels between the forks!
Very nice and **bling** but to be any use for anything other than a posing machine he’d need to seriously redesign the downtube for a race machine, might work if he made a dual or better still triple pipe along similar design as his current one with maybe 1″ long bracers every 6-8″ of the downtubes length.
I must say the rest of the frame looks as though it’ll do a nice rigid buggy though
Sorry if I missed something in your post, but whats the problems your seeing with the current downtube. I know nothing about building my own buggy, Im just looking at the bling
Whats the problem that you see with the down tube ??
The new BBS concept buggy has the very same curved down tube as this bug and I thot they were quite popular over on the continent?
Plus does Sand Yeti not always go on about how he thinks that a round pipe downtube would be alot stronger??? Something to do with handling flex better???
When a race buggy is under pressure in a race one of the major points is a ‘twisting’ motion that is exerted through the down tube, because of the side pull and the point contact of the front wheel. My original down tubes were only 50 x 20 mm box section and from head on pics I’ve seen, the top of the front forks must be nearly 15 degrees from verticle! they are much more rigid with the 60 x 40 box section   Although a circular tube is more resilient to the effect than a rectangular one it needs to be a fairly large diameter to resist the motion. The other problem is the anchoring of the downtube, i hate to say it but for all his fancy clamp, its all relying on the shear force on what looks like a 6mm screw.
I guess the reason most people use square section for downtubes is the fact you can grip it much better than a round tube. Flat sides don’t roll
Will be interesting to see how his testing go with it. I read on the site that he is thinking about covering the rear axle to create down force, what do you all reckon? Down force or slow you down?
the first homemade buggy i did was constructed from 25mm galv conduit including the swan, and it broke twice, i then slipped a box section over it and welded in place and the buggy was okay, i have two of the same constuction and had no probs since fitting the box section. i would be very carefull in trying a bug with this at the front ? the first accident was at 5mph the second at 15 mph holding a 3 m blade that was very interesting
This is true, but a quick look at the new down tube indicates that it will be less prone to twist than an equal length of 60×40 box section. Roughly a 35% improvement? Forgive my calcs if this is wrong, but it is 2 am…
I also meant to mention that the wall thickening/thinning on the bend of the new tube will effect the calcs, but that is impossible to predict and then calculate. now you sound like someone with the theoretical knowledge that can prove, on paper, what this old brain just ‘surmises’ with commonsense.
I’ve never been one for formula other than some basic electrical knowledge, maybe its time I did a mature student course and see if I can get around to proving, with knowledge, my gut-feelings after all these years
Saw this buggy in the flesh the other day and got to sit in it!…..The process from concept through to manufacture must be a mental slog…….
The more I look at this buggy the more I want one! The attachment plates for the wheels to adjust height is genius!… amongst ogther things. Only improvement would be feline striped covers!

that you are big Popeye.    is one of the most beautiful designs I’ve seen. surely these already thinking of becoming another buggy, jejejejeje .. impressive. greetings
hey, do you suggest UK as a KiteBuggyHolidayDestination(KBHD)?
PD: The Dom looks nice, once again good job
